Does ChatGPT Recommend Your Business? How to Check, and How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT

Ask ChatGPT for the best accountant in Bristol, a reliable freight forwarder in the Midlands or a strong B2B web agency, and it returns a shortlist of three to five names. Whether your company is on that list is now a commercial question. This guide explains how to check whether your business is recommended by ChatGPT, why a single check misleads, and which work moves a company onto the shortlist.

The short answer: ChatGPT recommends businesses it can identify clearly, describe accurately and see endorsed by other sources. To find out where you stand, test the questions your buyers ask, repeat each one several times, and measure how often you are named. One search is a snapshot. A mention rate across repeated searches is evidence.

Why being recommended by ChatGPT now matters

The shortlist increasingly forms before a prospect visits any website. In December 2025, Ofcom described ChatGPT as already the second largest search service in the UK. In the US, BrightLocal found that 45% of consumers used AI tools for local business recommendations in 2026, up from 6% a year earlier.

The places on that shortlist are scarce. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index examined more than 350,000 business locations and found ChatGPT recommended just 1.2% of them. The same research concluded that a ChatGPT recommendation is roughly 30 times harder to win than a place in Google's local pack. If an assistant leaves you out, the prospect may never search for your name at all.

Why one ChatGPT search tells you almost nothing

Most owners check once, see a competitor and draw a conclusion. That conclusion is rarely sound. Large language models generate every answer afresh, so the same question asked twice can return a different list.

BrightLocal's 2026 research into local AI visibility found that repeated runs of an identical ChatGPT prompt shared only around 23% of the businesses named. A business mentioned once reappeared in roughly half of later runs.

Personalisation adds further noise. Memory, earlier conversations, account location and whether ChatGPT searches the web for that query all shape the output. A director testing from a personal account is not seeing what a prospect in Leeds sees. Treat AI visibility as a probability, and measure it as one.

How to check if ChatGPT recommends your business

A credible check takes about an hour and follows four steps.

Step 1: Write the questions your buyers ask

Draft five prompts in your customers' language rather than the wording of your service pages. Include a location, a sector and a need. For example: "Which Bristol web agencies build booking systems for clinics?" or "Who are the best SEO companies for UK manufacturers?"

Step 2: Run each prompt five times

Open a temporary chat each time, so memory does not colour the result. Record every business named, its position in the list and the sources ChatGPT cites.

Step 3: Vary the platform and the location

Repeat the set in Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode. Ask a colleague in another town to run it too. Each platform draws on different sources, and SOCi found Gemini noticeably more accurate on local details than ChatGPT or Perplexity.

Step 4: Calculate your mention rate

Divide the answers that name you by the total answers. Twenty five runs that name you six times give a mention rate of 24%. Repeat the same set monthly and the trend becomes a dependable measure of progress.

Also read what the answer says about you. Insites analysed 10,000 local businesses and found 93% were known to at least one AI platform, yet only 55% had accurate details. Wrong opening hours or an outdated service list can cost an enquiry as surely as absence.

What ChatGPT reads before it recommends a business

AI assistants assemble recommendations from sources they judge trustworthy. Current research points to five that carry the most weight.

  • Your own website. Business websites accounted for about 42% of sources cited for local recommendations in BrightLocal's study. Insites also found the business website was the most cited source overall.
  • Google Business Profile. Roughly 29% of citations in the same BrightLocal research. Categories, services, hours and photos all feed the answer.
  • Reviews. Insites found Google review volume had the strongest correlation with AI visibility. SOCi adds that rating, freshness and response rate matter as well.
  • Brand mentions across the web. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, ahead of link metrics.
  • Directories and industry listings. Yelp, sector directories and trade bodies confirm the facts your website states.

Consistency ties these together. When your website, profiles and third party mentions describe the same business in the same terms, a model can state who you are with confidence. Contradictions create doubt, and a doubtful model names someone else.

How to get recommended by ChatGPT: seven actions that work

  1. Answer buyer questions directly on your site. Open each service page with a two or three sentence answer, then the detail. Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey rates on page signals as the largest factor in local AI visibility, at 24%.
  2. Add structured data. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and Review schema, written to Schema.org standards and validated, give machines unambiguous facts.
  3. Make business details identical everywhere. Your name, address, phone number, services and hours should match across your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and key directories.
  4. Build a steady flow of reviews. Ask every satisfied client, reply to each review, and encourage customers to name the service they used.
  5. Earn mentions, not only links. Podcast appearances, trade press commentary, partner pages, awards and case studies on client sites all strengthen your entity.
  6. Publish evidence. Named case studies, real figures, author biographies and dated updates satisfy Google's EEAT principles and give AI tools facts to quote.
  7. Keep AI crawlers welcome. Confirm your robots.txt file does not block OpenAI's or Perplexity's crawlers without a deliberate reason, and that key content loads without heavy JavaScript.

None of this is a trick. It is the discipline of good SEO, applied with the precision answer engines demand. That is the substance of answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO).

How Web Choice approaches AI visibility

We test our methods on ourselves first. Ask ChatGPT to recommend a top web development company in Bristol and Web Choice UK is among the businesses it surfaces, shown with our Google rating and category. That result came from the same work we deliver for clients: entity building, validated schema, consistent business information and content that answers real questions.

Our AEO service, which we call Algorithmic Experience Optimisation, combines question and intent research, technical schema, knowledge graph building, EEAT content and monthly visibility reporting across Google, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It sits on established technical SEO, so existing rankings stay protected while answer engine visibility grows.

How long it takes to be recommended

Technical fixes such as schema and profile corrections can register within weeks. Entity and authority building is slower, with meaningful gains typically appearing over three to six months. Because answers vary between runs, judge progress by the monthly mention rate rather than any single response.

Request your AI shortlist check. Send us your business name, your town and three questions your customers ask. We will run them across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, report your mention rate against competitors and show what to fix first. Request your check.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to have my business recommended by ChatGPT?

No. Organic recommendations cannot be purchased; they are earned through accurate information, reviews and authority.

If I rank well on Google, will ChatGPT recommend me too?

Not automatically. SOCi found that strong local pack positions do not reliably carry over into AI recommendations, so each needs its own attention.

Which AI platforms should a UK business monitor?

Start with ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Then add Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, since each relies on different sources.

Why does ChatGPT give incorrect details about my company?

It is usually repeating outdated or conflicting information found on your website, profiles or directories. Correcting those original sources is the dependable fix.

What separates AEO from GEO?

AEO aims to make your content the selected answer in search features and assistants. GEO targets generative tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini specifically, and the two methods overlap heavily.
